Can Am Renegade 1000 XMR
The Can Am Renegade 1000 XMR is available in two different models, which make up two of the four total Can Am Renegade models.
- Can Am Renegade (650cc base model)
- Can Am Renegade XXC 1000
- Can Am Renegade XMR 650
- Can Am Renegade XMR 1000
The XMR got its start in 2012 as Can Am’s mud-focused sport quad, with the “MR” in XMR actually standing for “Mud Racer”.
Can Am is known for creating high-performance sport models specific to certain types of riding, with the Renegade 1000 XXC being a “Cross Country” model and another of the all-time great Can Am models, the Can Am DS 650, being a “Dune Sport” model.
The Renegade 1000 XMR is available in two different color combinations – liquid titanium/red and catalyst gray/neo yellow.
Its cost for 2023 starts at $16,799, making it one of the most expensive models in the industry.
As a model made for riders who spend most of their time riding or racing in muddy conditions, it comes equipped with a number of mud-focused features that set it apart from the other Can Am Renegade models and help it excel in and power through the deepest, thickest mud.
Key Specs & Features
Engine
The Renegade 1000 XMR is powered by a 976cc Rotax V-Twin engine. This beast of an engine puts out a whopping 91 horsepower and is loaded with torque.
It also features Intelligent Throttle Control, which gives you the option of three different riding modes – ECO, normal, and sport.
Additionally, this model comes equipped with Can-Am’s very own Intelligent Engine Braking system. This feature is new, and offers three different levels of engine-braking assistance to select from.
The XMR’s airbox is snorkeled and its radiator elevated to keep both clear of the mud this model was made for.
This also gives it a distinct advantage during deeper water riding or crossings.
Engine Type | Rotax V-Twin, snorkeled |
Displacement | 976cc |
Horsepower | 91 HP |
Fuel Delivery | EFI w/ Intelligent Throttle Control |
Engine Cooling | Liquid-Cooled |
Engine Braking | Intelligent Engine Braking |
Fuel Capacity | 5.4 US Gallons |
Drivetrain
The Renegade 1000 XMR offers selectable 2WD/4WD with Visco-4Lok front differential, which can be fully locked for maximum traction in the mud and is a true front locking differential.
In terms of gearing, the XMR is purposely geared low to give it the ability to get through those deep-mud situations and turn the big stock tires.
It offers an extra low L-gear which gives it exceptional low-end grunt and helps it excel in deep mud where the tires are essentially buried.
But though it’s geared low, it still offers plenty of performance in High gear as well.
There aren’t many other quads in the industry that are as well-rounded as the XMR is performance-wise.
Drive System | Selectable 2WD/4WD/Lock 4WD w/ Visco-4Lok front differential |
Transmission Type | CVT Automatic |
Gears | P – R – N – H – Extra Low L |
Suspension
The Can Am Renegade 1000 XMR’s suspension system makes use of arched Double-A Arms up front and independent torsional trailing arms in the rear.
This is an aggressive suspension system used in ATV models that are meant to be ridden through the roughest of terrains.
While the suspension system is impressive, one of the more common complaints about the Renegade XMR is with the stock shocks.
The Renegade XMR uses Fox 1.5 Podium QS3 shocks, which stands for Quick Setting 3. These shocks only offer three preset settings, which doesn’t give riders much adjustability.
These stock shocks lead to the suspension feeling much stiffer when riding, with even the softest setting not offering much dampening.
The Renegade XMR offers an impressive 12.5 inches of ground clearance, giving it plenty of room to navigate large rocks, fallen trees, deep mud and water.
Wheelbase | 51 inches |
Ground Clearance | 12.5 inches |
Front Suspension | Arched Double A-Arm w/ Front Sway Bar |
Rear Suspension | Torsional Trailing Arm Independent |
Travel | Front – 9.2 inchesRear – 9.9 inches |
Tires & Brakes
The Renegade 1000 XMR comes with very aggressive 30-inch ITP Holeshot tires on 14-inch cast aluminum beadlock wheels, adding to its ability in deep mud.
But these grippy tires offer it excellent traction and stability in any terrain, helping enable this model to go pretty much anywhere.
The hydraulic disc braking system, along with the Can Am’s Intelling Engine Braking system, offers plenty of stopping power regardless of the terrain or elements.
Front Tires | 30 x 9-14 (ITP Cryptid) |
Rear Tires | 30 x 9-14 (ITP Cryptid) |
Wheels | 14 inch Cast-Aluminum Beadlock |
Front Brake Type | Dual Hydraulic Disc |
Rear Brake Type | Single Hydraulic Disc |
Dimensions
In terms of size, the XMR is an absolute beast and is one of the biggest overall ATVs in the industry.
It sits at 56 inches in height, with riders sitting up a bit higher than they would on most other sport quads.
At 971 lbs, the XMR is one of the heaviest ATVs in the industry. But its weight is no issue with the massive amount of power the engine is loaded with, as this model can get up and go quickly and is still one of the faster ATVs in the industry.
Length | 83 inches |
Width | 50 inches |
Height | 56 inches |
Dry Weight | 971 lbs. |
Seat Height | 36.75 inches |

It also comes equipped with a center digital display that includes a fuel gauge, speedometer, odometer, tachometer, gear indicator, 4WD indicator, and clock.
And as a “mud racer”, it only makes sense that the XMR comes standard with a 3,500 lbs winch up front to help get you out of any sticky situations.

Top Speed
The Can Am Renegade 1000 XMR tops out at 65 mph in stock form, compared to the Renegade 1000 XXC which tops out at 75 mph.
This difference is mainly due to the fact that the Renegade XMR features 30-inch stock tires that require an electronic speed limiter to be in place as a safety precaution while the XXC model is not subject to the same precaution.
You can read more about bypassing this speed limiter to put these models on a more level playing field speed-wise in this guide to the Renegade’s top speed.
